Clicking / Skipping Extruder

A clicking or skipping extruder produces audible clicking sounds as the drive gear repeatedly slips against the filament. This indicates the extruder cannot push filament through the hotend, leading to under-extrusion or complete print failure.

Common Causes

  1. Partial nozzle clog — Debris or carbonized filament restricts flow through the nozzle
  2. Nozzle too close to bed — Excessive squish creates back-pressure the extruder cannot overcome
  3. Print temperature too low — Under-heated filament resists flowing through the nozzle
  4. Filament grinding — The drive gear chews into the filament, losing grip
  5. PTFE tube degraded or misaligned — A gap between the tube and nozzle causes filament jams
  6. Excessive retraction — Too-long retractions cause repeated heat zone jams
  1. Perform a cold pull to clear partial clogs from the nozzle
  2. Increase nozzle temperature by 5-10°C to improve filament flow
  3. Raise Z-offset slightly if the nozzle is too close to the bed
  4. Check and replace the PTFE tube if it is worn, charred, or not seated flush against the nozzle
  5. Reduce retraction distance (Bowden: max 5mm, Direct Drive: max 1.5mm)
  6. Reduce print speed to lower the volumetric flow demand on the hotend
  7. Inspect the extruder gear for wear and clean out any ground filament debris
