Stringing occurs when thin threads of filament are left between separate parts of a print during travel moves. This is caused by filament oozing from the nozzle while the print head moves.
Common Causes
- Insufficient retraction — The filament isn’t pulled back enough during travel
- Temperature too high — Lower viscosity leads to more oozing
- Travel speed too low — Slower moves give more time for oozing
- Wet filament — Moisture creates steam and inconsistent extrusion
Recommended Fixes
- Increase retraction distance (Bowden: 4-7mm, Direct Drive: 0.5-2mm)
- Increase retraction speed (25-50mm/s)
- Lower nozzle temperature by 5-10°C
- Increase travel speed
- Enable “Combing” or “Avoid crossing perimeters”
- Dry your filament if moisture is suspected
