Print speed affects every aspect of a 3D print: surface quality, dimensional accuracy, layer adhesion, and total print time. Running too fast causes ringing artifacts on sharp corners, poor overhangs, and weak inter-layer bonding. Running too slowly wastes time without a proportional quality gain. The key is assigning different speeds to different feature types.

This calculator breaks your maximum speed into recommended values for outer walls, inner walls, infill, and the first layer. Outer walls are printed slower for a smooth visible surface, while infill can be pushed much faster since it is hidden inside the part. The first layer uses a reduced speed to ensure strong bed adhesion, which is critical for print success. Each recommendation is proportional to your printer's tested maximum so the values stay within your hardware's capability.

After applying these speeds, check that your hotend can melt filament fast enough by using the Volumetric Flow Rate Calculator. If the required flow exceeds your hotend's limit, you will need to reduce speed, decrease layer height, or upgrade to a high-flow hotend. Balancing speed and flow is the secret to fast, reliable printing.
