Volumetric flow rate measures the volume of molten plastic your hotend must extrude per second, expressed in cubic millimeters per second (mm3/s). It is calculated by multiplying layer height, line width, and print speed. Every hotend has a maximum throughput — exceed it and the extruder will skip steps, under-extrude, or jam entirely. Understanding this limit is the single most important step before pushing print speeds higher.
A standard V6-style hotend with a brass nozzle maxes out around 11-15 mm3/s, while high-flow hotends with bimetal heat breaks and hardened nozzles can reach 25-40 mm3/s or more. This calculator takes your desired layer height, line width, and speed, computes the required flow, and compares it against common hotend limits so you know immediately whether your settings are achievable.
